In this post, we’re taking you behind the scenes of our custom design process, sharing a few of our favorite custom wedding projects, and talking about some important decisions - like which metal to choose and why we often steer couples away from certain options like rhodium-plated white gold.

Another example is a young couple who wanted to incorporate an heirloom round diamond—gifted by the groom’s mother—into their engagement ring. The result was a timeless design that honored both their love and a cherished family legacy.
The Gold Karat Question: What’s the Difference?
Choosing the right metal is one of the first decisions in designing a custom ring. We often get questions about the difference between 10k, 14k, and 18k gold, and lately, we’ve seen a big resurgence in yellow gold.
Here’s the short version:
- 10k gold is 41.7% pure gold, making it the most durable and scratch-resistant of the three. Because it has a higher percentage of alloy metals, it’s more affordable but has a paler, less rich color than 14k or 18k.
- 14k gold is 58.3% pure gold, mixed with stronger alloys like copper and silver. It’s durable, scratch-resistant, and great for active lifestyles.
- 18k gold is 75% pure gold, with a richer, more luxurious color and slightly heavier weight. It’s softer than 14k but still very wearable with proper care.
We love both, but if you want that warm, glowing yellow tone that’s trending again, 18k yellow gold is hard to beat. It’s the color most people think of when they picture classic gold jewelry, and it has a timeless appeal.
Why We Don’t Recommend White Gold with Rhodium Plating
Here’s something you might not hear from every jeweler: we generally discourage customers from choosing white gold with rhodium plating, especially for wedding jewelry.
Why? Because rhodium plating is not permanent. Over time, the plating wears off, revealing the slightly yellowish tone of the white gold beneath. That means you’ll need to re-plate your ring every year or so to maintain its bright white look—and that’s not ideal for a piece you wear daily.
Instead, we suggest platinum for clients who love a bright white metal. Platinum is naturally white, hypoallergenic, and incredibly durable. While it’s often a bit more expensive upfront, it requires far less maintenance in the long run—and it will look just as beautiful on your 50th anniversary as it did on day one.
Behind the Scenes: Our Three-Step Custom Design Process
Step 1: Consultation
We start with a 30-minute consultation at our Marietta, GA studio (or virtually if you’re out of town). This is where the magic begins. We’ll talk about your vision, budget, timeline, and style preferences. Bring your inspiration photos, family stones, or even sketches - we love collaborating with clients to shape their ideas into something tangible.
Step 2: Production
Once we’ve finalized the design, Andres Cardenas, our founder, designer, and master jeweler, brings it to life. We use a mix of cutting-edge CAD technology and old-world craftsmanship to create your piece. Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do, so all our metals are recycled or responsibly sourced. We also specialize in upcycling, turning old family jewelry into modern heirlooms.
Step 3: Delivery
In just 3–4 weeks, your finished ring is ready for pickup (or shipping). Seeing the final piece in our clients’ hands—often with happy tears involved—is the best part of our work.
